The last dredging of the lower Minnesota River occurred August 23 through September 8, 2004 at the Savage and Peterson’s bars (no. 5 and no. 3 in the chart below), the historical problem areas. “But there might be stretches,” says Steve Tapp of the COE, “where we need dredging every year for three straight years, then we won’t dredge again for three more years. It depends on the hydrology, high water events in the spring, and other factors.”  

  1. One cut that fills in often is above the Savage railroad bridge, at mile 14.5 (no. 5 below)

  2. The cut that fills in most frequently is at Peterson’s Bar, about mile 12  (no. 3 below)

  3. Several private company slips require dredging, from mile 12.8 to mile 14.7. (no. 4–S5 below)
