Buffer strip

The MPCA will encourage farmers to adopt BMPs, or Best Management Practices, in order to hold more water on their land. Here, a buffer strip along a ditch filters and helps clean runoff.

Without such buffering, ditches may drain fields but impair the waters into which they empty. See MPR report on the subject.
